Focusing on the flash flood zones at full flood (the flood zones identified on the Sub-basin map) shows the land as necks extending into the fully flooded lake headwaters. After all, one of the primary purposes of Lake Jordan was mitigation of the flash flooding that often occurred in the Haw River and New Hope Creek basins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">We see that Parkwood comprises parts of three sub-basins:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">The main stream of Northeast Creek on the east;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Tributary C feeding Parkwood Lake in the center;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Tributary D draining the western part of the McCormick high land and streams from Hunters Woods joining and running down Wineberry to the west.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">To find out which sub-basin you are in, find where your house is on the map.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">For reference, look for these landmarks:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Parkwood Elementary School<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Parkwood Fire Station<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Gas House Shell Station<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">South Durham (SoDu) Farmers Market at Greenwood Commons. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Click on the image of the map. Now look for the landmarks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Now trace the path the water takes from your house to the main stream, Tributary C, or Tributary D.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Are any streams by your property?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Which sub-basin do they flow into?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Where does the runoff from your house enter a stream?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Does it flow through a stormwater drain or stormwater pipe? Where does the water drain into a stream?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">Does it flow down intermittent creeks that only have water when it rains?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">A fun activity is to put on your rain gear when it rains and follow the water where it flows until you locate the storm drain and stream into which the runoff flows.<\/span><\/p>\n ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Creek Week is coming March 13 through 20.
