Four people met in the Parkwood Branch Library conference room, including Peter Schubert, who found out about Northeast Creek Streamwatch at a presentation that members made to the Research Triangle Foundation Environment Committee on June 10.
Transitions
Liz Pullman, one of the founding members has moved to Austin, TX. Liz had been active on the Durham Open Spaces and Trails Committee. Because of this, before she left she received thanks from the Durham County Commissioners. She will continue her contribution to Northeast Creek Streamwatch as our Consulting Naturalist.
Research Triangle Foundation Presentation
Colleen Haithcock, Program Coordinator, made a 15-20 minute PowerPoint presentation about Northeast Creek Streamwatch at the around 25 people at the quarterly meeting of the Research Triangle Foundation Environment Committee. The committee consists of environmental managers for many of the companies with offices in Research Triangle Park. Research Triangle Park is on Burdens Creek and Kitt Creek, tributaries of Northeast Creek.
The State of Our Waterways Conference
The State of Our Waterways Conference of water quality monitoring groups was a successful first meeting. Along with the five members of Northeast Creek Streamwatch, there were representatives from the City of Durham Stormwater Services, New Hope Audubon Society, Friends of Bolin Creek, Haw River Assembly, and the Eno River Association. Michelle Woolfolk reported on the new State of Our Streams report for Durham County, Michael Pollock reported on the work of Northeast Creek Streamwatch, followed by speakers from the Audubon Society, Haw River Assembly, and Eno River Association.
Northeast Creek Streamwatch Receives Award for NC Big Sweep Participation
Laura , Publicity Coordinator attend the award ceremony at the Bahama Ruritan Club to accept the award presented by Durham County Soil and Water Conservation. Northeast Creek Streamwatch had the largest Big Sweep cleanup in Durham County last October. The award is on display at the Parkwood Library.
Stream Monitoring - Sedwick Road
Monitoring of the Sedwick Road site occurred on June 8. There were ruby-throated hummingbirds flying around. The oxygen level was around 4.8ppm.
Resolution for Environmental Amendments and Protections (Durham County Unified Development Ordinance)
Northeast Creek Streamwatch voted to formally endorse the set of amendments that have been proposed by several neighborhood groups.
Kit Creek Leatherwood Plant Rescue
There was a report about the rescue of leatherwood plants from the reservoir of a new lake on Kit Creek in RTP by a plant rescue organization. Northeast Creek Streamwatch was asked to help find locations in the Northeast Creek watershed for them to be planted in the fall, followed by about a year of follow-up tending.
Development Updates
The Learning Experience Daycare floodplain fill request went through the City Council.
New:
One of the projects on Davis Drive at Hopson Road is being moved from RTP and/or County jurisdiction to City. This is not a major change, and borders a planned toll road that will connect the Durham Freeway with I-540.
